HONORS AND AWARDS

Bradford M. Casas has assumed the duties of chairman of the Chesapeake Hospital Authority, succeeding J. Ridgely Porter III. Other officers are Dr. Richard Holden, vice chairman; Dr. Nicholas H. Augenstein, secretary; and Dr. Prudencio Mendez Jr., treasurer. The Hospital Authority is an 11-member board appointed by the City Council to govern the operations of the hospital.

Barbara B. Gormley and Pamela Behan, fashion advisors, recently attended an international conference of top independent fashion consultants of Bensenville, Ill.-based Lady Remington Fashion Jewelry, which specializes in jewelry sold through in-home shows and one-on-one selling.

Jonathan Phillips, 12, a rising seventh-grader at Great Bridge Middle School North, won a new bicycle helmet autographed by the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park. The autographed helmet was presented to Phillips as part of Hall Auto World ``Ball Night'' in cooperation with the Norfolk Police Department and Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety.

The new officers of the American Legion Post 280 for the new year are Frank Hildabrand, commander; John Bishop, first vice president; Arnie Ireland, second vice president; Jim Edwards, adjutant; John Geddings, finance; Grant Smith, chaplain; Tom Violet, sergeant-at-arms; Arthur Jones, historian and Tom Walter, board.

The auxiliary's new officers are Deborah Spruill, president; Barbara Schmidt, vice president; Sharon Schmidt, secretary and treasurer; Joyce Hipp, chaplain; Vicky Casey, sergeant-at-arms; Rose Seay; historian; and Jane Cordell and Rita Thompson, board members.

Hannah E. Thompson, 88, of the 2700 block of Holly Point Blvd. recently had original poetry published in ``After The Storm,'' an anthology published by the National Library of Poetry. The title of the poem is ``Thank You Again.'' The main subject is an appreciation for prayers given during illness.

Stephanie Kaye Reed, daughter of Randy and Glenda Reed of Chesapeake, has received the Commonwealth Scholarship from Sweet Briar College. Reed, the 1995 salutatorian of Deep Creek High, will attend Sweet Briar College and plans a career in medicine.

Mary Ann Saunders, assistant to the city manager, has been elected as an executive board member of the Virginia Local Government Management Association. The association of city and county managers promotes professional development and a code of ethics among its members. Saunders has been employed by the city since September 1987. She has a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration from Old Dominion University.

Joanna Carol Steele, daughter of Dan and Patricia Steele of the 500 block of Belem Drive, was named to the dean's list at the College of William and Mary for the spring semester with a 3.68 grade-point average. Steele is a biology major with plans to graduate in December and to go on to medical school. She is a 1992 graduate of Great Bridge High School. MEMO: Won an award or scholarship?
