It is terribly ironic that the United Nations has just celebrated its 50th anniversary, for the sounds echoing from its performance in Bosnia are hollow and tin-like. The U.N. has become a ridiculous, cowardly organization that betrays the trust of the Moslem enclaves it has promised to protect while groveling before fascist Serb leaders who have been indicted as war criminals.
We are witnessing the repetition of decades past when the doomed League of Nations gradually collapsed as, one by one, fascist dictators grew more and more emboldened to promote aggression and war. It is naive to think that the forces of terrorism and destruction are not waiting in the wings to see which way Bosnia goes. If the U.N. pulls out now, it will be opening wide the gates to world chaos as we enter the 21st century. What a terrible legacy to leave future generations!
It is incumbent upon the United States to assume greater leadership in defeating the fascist forces wreaking havoc in Bosnia. Neither President Clinton's half measures nor Sen. Bob Dole's isolationist defeatism will do. If they won't ensure that international law and order is respected and enforced while the world is watching, then let them stand aside for someone who will.
