EYLER IS CATHOLIC'S GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH

Leanne Eyler has been named girls basketball coach at Catholic High. She succeeds Jerry Carmody, who will continue to coach boys baseball.

Eyler, 34, has been girls junior varsity basketball coach for the past seven years and steered her team to a 20-2 record last season.

A graduate and former star player at Catholic, Eyler was the most valuable player in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament in 1980. She also was an All-TCIS selection.

Eyler played four years at Christopher Newport and was the MVP of the Dixie Conference Tournament in 1985. She was a Division III second-team All-America pick.

``This is a position I've always wanted,'' Eyler said. ``To come back to my alma mater as a head coach is a dream come true.''

Eyler said she will have her dad, Lee Eyler, as an assistant. He formerly coached at Christ the King.

``He has been my coach all my life,'' she said. ``What I know today is a direct reflection on what he taught me.''

Eyler began her duties with practices this week. Catholic has five returning letter winners. Five players are up from Eyler's last junior varsity squad. The team opens its season on Aug. 29.

Eyler teaches health, physical education and driver education at the school. She is department head in physical education. by CNB
