ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF SUSPENDED IN NORFOLK

Assistant Fire Chief Louis M. Johnson has been suspended after Chesapeake police found gambling items in his car during a recent routine traffic stop, police and fire sources said.

The suspension came after police in Chesapeake found sports gambling records in Johnson's car, said several sources, speaking on condition that they not be identified. The sources are in Chesapeake and Norfolk law enforcement, and in the Norfolk Fire Department.

It was unclear how long the suspension will be, or when it took effect. Police in Chesapeake, saying the case is ``very sensitive,'' would not discuss it. Gambling investigations are common in Hampton Roads; most result in misdemeanor charges. An official police spokesman would not say when Johnson was arrested or why. Norfolk city officials also declined to comment.

This is at least Johnson's second suspension in two years. In 1993, Johnson was reprimanded and suspended for 10 days after city officials deemed improper his visit to the home of a female Fire Department applicant at 4 a.m.

Johnson could not be reached for comment. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
