Joan McSweeney, 61, a longtime member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and Meals on Wheels volunteer, died Aug. 21, 1995, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Joan was a loving wife and mother. She was a native of Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland.
She is survived by her husband John P. McSweeney; two sons, John W. of Virginia Beach and Neil E. of Lynchburg; one daughter, Rosemary F. Makepeace of Norfolk; one son-in-law, Lester B. Makepeace; one daughter-in-law, Andrea McSweeney; four grandchildren, Joey and Joanna Marie Makepeace, Katie and Ben McSweeney; two brothers, Patrick O'Sullivan of California and Denis O'Sullivan of Ireland; three sisters, Nora O'Leary and Teresa Kellehar of Ireland and Sheila Becker of Michigan; sister-in-law, Eileen O'Sullivan of California; brothers-in-law, Julius Becker of Michigan and William F. McSweeney of California, Tadha O'Driscoll and Paddy Kellehar of Ireland, and Harry Pymm of England.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 1995, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Family and friends will assemble at the Kellum Funeral Home, Kempsville/Pleasant Hall Chapel at 9 a.m. and leave in procession to the funeral mass. Burial will be at Rosewood Memorial Park. A Christian Wake service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Pleasant Hall Chapel of Kellum Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the Wake service from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
