WOMEN BEGIN VMI PROGRAM

The first women to enter a military-type training program set up to

keep them out of the Virginia Military Institute were issued their

uniforms Tuesday and began a demanding week of orientation. But the

charter class at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton faced nothing like

the ``hell week'' that ended Shannon Faulkner's stay at The

Citadel.

All-male VMI is putting up more than $5 million to establish the

program. VMI, which opened 155 years ago, and The Citadel are the

nation's only men-only state-supported military colleges.
