The first women to enter a military-type training program set up to
keep them out of the Virginia Military Institute were issued their
uniforms Tuesday and began a demanding week of orientation. But the
charter class at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton faced nothing like
the ``hell week'' that ended Shannon Faulkner's stay at The
Citadel.
All-male VMI is putting up more than $5 million to establish the
program. VMI, which opened 155 years ago, and The Citadel are the
nation's only men-only state-supported military colleges.
