IT'S NO ACCIDENT: BAD CARTS ARE PAIN IN THE NECK, BACK

HAVE A backache? The cause could be your shopping cart, or supermarket trolley as it's called in England.

A recent issue of The (London) Observer says carts cause back strain and 7,000 accidents each year in that country. The figures are from The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and the National Back Pain Association.

Shopping carts ``force us into movements that nature never intended,'' The Observer observes. ``Trollies are so unwieldy and wayward that propelling them twists our spines.''

Said Carl Riberio, a Kent solicitor who is trying to design the perfect shopping cart: ``We can send a man to the moon, but apparently we cannot solve the problem of a trolley with a mind of its own.''

Don't drop the crumbs

East meets West tonight when Haynes Furniture hosts the California Cuisine Cook-Off.

As part of Expo '95, the store has invited area chefs to compete for prizes. Brewer's East Inn, Areo's Grill, Cafe Society, Animation, Mahi Mah's, the Norfolk Airport Hilton and Sage's, among others, will participate.

The competition will be from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes free tastings for the public. Stop by, have a bite and cast your vote for the People's Choice Award.
