2 PLAYERS FROM SOUTHAMPTON MAKE ALL-STATE BASEBALL TEAM

Two Southampton baseball players were named to the all-state team at the Commonwealth Games in Roanoke last month.

Third baseman William Brown was named First Team All-State, while second baseman Brad Davis received honorable mention.

``It's a real honor because not a lot of people from Southampton have done it,'' Brown said. ``Baseball has never been real big at our school.''

The tournament pits four Virginia all-star teams - East, Central, North and West - against each other. The East defeated the North, 5-4, to win the gold medal after a first-round loss.

``We expected to win because we went there to win the gold,'' said Davis, who batted .383 with 21 stolen bases for Southampton last year. ``We knew we had some good ballplayers from this area and (Virginia Beach). We weren't sure how we would hit the ball against other pitching though.''

Brown and Davis were two of 85 players who tried out for the 15-player team.

``I was overwhelmed until I started playing,'' Davis said. ``You just have to concentrate and do your best to play up to the competition.'' by CNB
