MARY B. ACELA

Mary Bridgette Acela, 61, of the 1800 block of Wolfsnare Road, died Aug. 22, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.

She was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was currently employed as a social worker for the City of Norfolk. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu sorority, member of Bayhaven Garden Club of Norfolk, a member of AARP, registrar for the City of Virginia Beach, and was an active volunteer for First Landing Seashore Park. She was a graduate of Norfolk State University in 1985 with her BSW, and later received her MSW from NSU in 1986.

She is survived by her husband, Frank John Acela; three daughters, Barbara Acela Johnson and her fiance, Dwayne Vander Wall, Tracy Acela, and Jan Acela, all of Virginia Beach; one son, John Acela and his wife, Lita, of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Kay Schurr of White Plains, N.Y., Helen Wells of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Elizabeth O'Connor of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by two brothers, William J. O'Connor and Brian O'Connor.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church by the Rev. Anselm Ober O.S.B. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, today from 7 to 9:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Russell House Van Fund, 900 First Colonial Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23654. Mary will be greatly missed by the community for her advocacy for many social causes.
