The salvage ship Edenton is headed to the waters off Cape Hatteras, where it hopes to recover the 3,600-pound propeller from the sunken Civil War ironclad Monitor.
Edenton's crew and members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration plan to relocate the Monitor's skeg, which is a part of the keel. If successful, the propeller will be taken to the Mariners' Museum in Newport News.
The ship's original visit to the site, in 230 feet of water 16 miles off Cape Hatteras, was postponed last week because of Hurricane Felix.
Movement of the skeg and recovery of the propeller are considered essential to the long-term stabilization of the Monitor's fragile hull. For the past 20 years the ironclad has been designated a national marine sanctuary. by CNB
