FASHION: THEY STYLE SEARCH

So, you're going back to school. Get ready to switch gears. The endless summer is about to end. It's time to shape shift. That means getting yourself in a different mode. Your feet are back on dry land, your body is back in the classroom. And that's not so bad. That first day is always exciting.

So, what are you going to wear? Are you in the Conservative Club? Or maybe you mix your styles like a techno jock. The newest Mod rage rules with vinyl. And there's always the Surfer N Hood blend. Teen fashion keeps going back in time in search of styles. " We're still in the 70's - the fabric and design, like polyester flowers and paisleys- the look was here last year but it stuck around" says Al Habit, owner of The Factory in Virginia Beach.

And what keeps it going at the pace and mood it does? " Music and fashion go hand in hand. Music tries to be alternative, away from the mainstream, often with no direction. Fashion follows the same form," Habit said.

So, what can you expect to see? For guys it's racer stripes, plaid button down shirts, denim, rag fleece, flannel and big ribbed corduroy- the bigger the better. And anything that's connected with surf brands like Rusty and Quiksilver. Sales assistant Kevin Mack of WRV notes, " even collared off-beat bowling shirts paired with a twill slack work. It's not meant to impress anyone - it's just real trendy."

Girls can expect clothes in vinyl, denim, lots of plaid and argyle. Little sweater sets, micro mini's, jumpers. Movies like " Tank Girl" and " Clueless" will influence what you'll see.

So, what if your parents don't think the latest fashions are a Class Act? At Fly, Robin Devore is buying back to school clothes with her son and daughter, ages 15 and 17. Do they have a dress code? Does she have one for them? " I go along with the school rules although at Ocean Lakes High they're pretty lenient. My son likes to wear all his pants two sizes - no, make that eight sizes too big. At least I know he'll never grow out of them. My daughter wants mini skirts and that's o.k. as long as the shirts don't show bare midrifts. They just dress like everyone around them".
