EDUCATION BRIEFS - SUFFOLK

GRANTS AWARDED: Paul D. Camp Community College has received two Gender Equity Grant awards totaling $150,000. The money will be used to fund Gender Equity programs at each of the college's two campuses.

The amount of $75,000 will fund the continuation of the Gender Equity Opportunity Center at the Franklin Campus, and $75,000 will fund the continuation of the Opportunity Center at the Oliver K. Hobbs Suffolk Campus.

The program in Virginia ensures educational and career opportunities free of gender bias and gender-role stereotyping for all students.

The program focuses on eliminating discrimination, provides access to all programs in vocational education, math, science, and technology, and prevents subtle forms of discrimination in the presentation of career options or interactions between instructors and students.

A Virginia Works ``Funds for Innovation'' grant in the amount of $54,000 was recently awarded by the Virginia Community College System to the ``Southside Virginia Alliance for Bridging Work with Education.''

Matching funds are pledged also by participants of this regional alliance which includes Paul D. Camp Community College, five other community colleges, regional public secondary schools (including Franklin and Southampton) and employers, the Southside Virginia Business and Education Commission, regional economic development councils, as well as the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Center and other private/nonprofit corpo-rations.

The grant will be used for a regional effort to develop job profiles for employers and vocational/technical programs, and the development and implementation of skills assessment tests. The objectives of the alliance are to assess the skills and knowledge needed for employment and to assist the public schools and the community colleges in developing instruction that will provide students with the identified skills and knowledge . . . thereby increasing their employment potential and providing business and industry with skilled and trained employees.

NANSEMOND RIVER HONORED: The Central Fidelity Cup will be presented to Nansemond River High School by a representative from the Virginia High School League at a half-time ceremony during the football game Sept. 8 in Arrowhead Stadium.

A reception for invited community leaders will be held in the cafeteria at 7 p.m.

The Virginia High School League recently awarded the Warriors the Group AA Central Fidelity Cup, which recognizes the best athletic program in state competition.

The prestigious cup is earned by accumulating points from the high school's sports teams finishing first through eighth in state playoffs. The deciding factor for the Warriors was the girls' softball victory in the state semi-finals.

Nansemond River also won the state boys' basketball championship, made the state semi-finals in football and baseball, and the quarter-finals in volleyball.

Girls' basketball and field hockey as well as golf also won district championships. Winning the cup also shows other schools that a solid athletic program is possible with strong academic standards.

Suffolk Public Schools requires all students participating in extracurricular activities to maintain a 2.0 or a ``C'' grade-point average. The Virginia High School League requires athletes to pass five courses. by CNB
