CITY MAY RUN BIDE-A-WEE WHEN CONTRACT ENDS SEPT. 1

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

The city may take over operation of the Bide-A-Wee golf course Sept. 1 when the present contract expires.

Dr. Lydia Patton, Director of Leisure Services, said the club may be operated by a manager and without a pro.

Betty Brown of Portsmouth has been made an honorary lifetime member of the Duck Woods Ladies Golf Association at Nags Head.

She was recognized last week for her longtime contributions, especially her efforts in helping to start the ladies association in 1973.

``When we started, we had only eight members,'' recalled Brown. ``Now there are more than 120 ladies in the association.''

A few years ago, Brown was made an honorary member of the club itself.

John Spence has been elected president of the Sports Foundation of the Portsmouth Sports Club.

The foundation offers partial scholarships each year to deserving senior athletes at area high schools at the Sports Club Jamboree.

Gracie Lee VanDyck is vice chairman, Gene Luke is treasurer and Bill Kline is secretary. Other members are Bucky Dodson, Joe Lofurno, Jimmy Williams, Jackie Taylor and Walter Jernigan.

What's the story on the tennis courts at the old Cradock High School?

Obviously, no one has maintained them since the school closed several years ago. Their present condition is a disgrace.

These courts even have lights and it would seem citizens in that area who want to play tennis would get behind an effort to have these courts in operation again.

Norcom's new boys basketball coach, Joel Copeland, plans to commute from his home in Holland daily.

But Copeland says the long daily drive is no problem.

``For the past 14 years, I have driven to work in Virginia Beach just about every day,'' said Copeland. ``So this actually is a lot closer.''

The merger of Portsmouth and Norfolk schools into the Eastern District next year will rekindle some old football rivalries.

Wilson will resume playing Maury and Norview. The Presidents and Commodores first met in 1916. Wilson and Norview started meeting in 1948.

The Norcom-Booker T. Washington rivalry has never ceased. This year, the two schools meet for the 63rd time. But this series lost much of its spice after Norcom joined the Southeastern and the Bookers went into the Eastern. Now the meetings will be more meaningful.

In all probability, the master football schedule in the Eastern Region will be overhauled completely. The new schedule will be used for the next three years, alternating home-and-away games.

This definitely is a time to get the Norcom-Churchland game moved away from being the season opener for the two teams.

Also needed is a change for the Greyhounds in the order of home-and-road games. This year, Norcom plays its first four games at home (although home is at Churchland) and has its last three on the road.

This year, Wilson has no home games after Oct. 20. Churchland has all five of its road games in the first seven weeks.

Possibly the schedule can be made to prevent Thursday and Saturday games for the Portsmouth teams since they are all using Churchland Stadium. by CNB
