Schools and non-profit community groups can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to develop ``hands-on'' projects that promote environmental stewardship.
This is the third year that Phillips Petroleum Co. has offered the Phillips Environmental Partnerships awards, based on a philosophy that the best way to attack environmental problems is for local communities to work together to solve them.
Selected schools receive direct money grants, while community groups are given ``challenge'' awards that must be matched.
Past grants in Virginia went to Montgomery County School in Christiansburg to start a pilot composting program at three elementary schools; to a Charlottesville elementary school to develop an arboretum, nature trail and outdoor classroom; and to the Virginia Museum of Natural History Foundation in Martinsville for garden start-up costs for 10 public schools.
The deadline to apply for a grant is Sept. 15. Entries will be judged by the Center for Environmental Education at Oklahoma State University.
