JAMES R. REID JR.

Dr. James Robert Reid Jr., 90, died Aug. 26, 1995, in Sentara Nursing Center, Virginia Beach.

He was a member of Bayside Presbyterian Church, having served previously as an elder at Union Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Richburg, S.C.

A native of Richburg, he was a graduate of Clemson College and the Medical University of South Carolina.

He served as a physician for 30 years with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. His naval career included service with the CCC, USS Oklahoma, Atlantic and Pacific Destroyer Divisions, and the USS San Juan. After World War II, he served in Guam as the physician for the islands in the Trust Territories, where he was instrumental in establishing a leper colony on Tinian. Other tours of duty were in Annapolis, Philadelphia, Green Cove Springs, and Key West. He commanded the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, S.C., before retiring in 1958.

He lived in Fort Mill, S.C., from 1960-1991, where he served as medical director for Spring Mills for 14 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kola, of Sentara Nursing Center; his son, Jim, and his wife, Jean, of Virginia Beach; his grandson, Dr. Jay Reid, and his wife, Brooke, of Lancaster, Pa.; his granddaughter, Jenny Horton, and her husband, David, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Matthew Horton.

Memorial services will be held at Bayside Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Richard J. Keever officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
