CRIME LINE

Local police are asking public assistance in solving these cases:

PORTSMOUTH

On May 20, 1994, about 8 p.m., Reginald Arron Cannon was sitting in a vehicle in the first block of Wallace Circle, talking to a friend.

Suddenly, several men ran up to the car and began shooting into it.

When police arrived, they found Cannon in the front yard with gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His friend also was shot.

He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he recovered.

Investigators are still puzzled by the shooting, and are looking for the motive and suspects.

SUFFOLK

On Aug. 21, about 4:30 a.m., a 31-year-old North Carolina woman was robbed of a small amount of money and taken to the 500 block of Ockawaha Ave. where she was raped, severely beaten and kicked by two men.

She was then left behind a house at 502 Ockawaha Ave.

The victim remains in intensive care at a local hospital.

The first suspect is described as black, 18 to 22 years old with brown eyes and black hair.

He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

The second suspect is described as black, 18 to 22 years old with light-colored skin, brown eyes and black hair.

He was wearing a white ball cap, dark shirt and jeans.

CHESAPEAKE

Investigators are trying to solve a hit-and-run accident that occurred almost 20 years ago.

Advances in forensic technology have turned up new evidence.

On Jan. 24, 1976, at 11:20 p.m., Richard Hanley, 15, was struck and killed by a van while walking in the 400 block of N. Battlefield Blvd.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a white van with Virginia registration HLB-616.

Investigators discovered the van had been stolen earlier that evening from the Thirsty Camel in the Ocean View section of Norfolk.

VIRGINIA BEACH

On Sunday, Aug. 13, about 5:15 p.m., two men wearing bandannas over their faces entered Northern Hydraulics at 116 South Independence Blvd.

After coming in through a rear door, one of the robbers who was armed with a handgun asked for money.

After obtaining cash, the men left in a dark blue van, possibly a Chrysler, with Virginia license plates. The first three numbers may have been 238.

Both robbers are described as black and in their 20s.

One was about 6 feet tall, weighed about 175 pounds and wore a dark blue jumpsuit.

The second was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed about 200 pounds.

HAMPTON< On Aug. 12, at 12:25 p.m., two men were seen trying to break into Cash Quick Pawn Ship at 3300 W. Mercury Blvd. When police arrived, they saw a vehicle speeding away from a nearby parking lot.

The suspects attempted to run over an officer at the scene.

The suspects are described as black and in their 20s.

The vehicle is described as a silver car, possibly an 1980s model Toyota Celica. The first letter of the license plate is Z.

NORFOLK

On Aug. 19 at 11:45 p.m. a young couple was crossing the 3000 block of Waterside Drive near Waterside.

As they crossed the street, they were struck by an automobile which did not stop.

The man and woman were taken to a local hospital and treated for leg injuries.

Descriptions of the hit-and-run vehicle are uncertain and police need any witnesses or anyone who might have information about the driver to call.

Crime Line will hold its 2nd Annual Golf Classic on Friday, Sept. 15 at the Lake Wright Golf Course on Northampton Boulevard.
