On a record-setting night at Langley Speedway, Norfolk native Phil Warren did what he was unable to do the last two weeks.
He won.
In a record 31-car field that was trimmed to 26 cars after a 15-lap qualifier, Warren took the checkered flag for the 16th time this season Saturday night in the 100-lap late model feature.
Warren, who was trailed by Chester native John Livingston the entire race, never had any serious contenders.
``Well, we sure needed this win,'' Warren said. ``I just wish Bugs Hairfield (last week's winner) could have been here so I could have ousted him too.''
Hairfield qualified for the race, but he apparently was upset at what he called ``people who have to cheat to win out here,'' leaving before any of the races began.
Livingston seemed content to remain second to Warren and never really made a move to try and overtake him.
``Both cars were pretty equal,'' Livingston said. ``I think if I would have been in front it would have finished the reverse.
``We are getting better each week. This is the best we have finished this season.''
Chesapeake's Roger Sawyer finished third after starting the race in the fourth position.
``Phil didn't make any mistakes tonight,'' said Sawyer, brother of Grand National and Winston Cup racer Elton Sawyer.
``I just couldn't close the gap after the caution flags.''
Sawyer was referring to the three cautions during the race. He and Livingston were unable to pick up any ground on the restarts.
The Speedway also had a record of 150 cars total for all six races.
In other races:
Points leader Tod Carson won his 16th limited stock race of the season.
Carson, the pole-sitter, beat Jerry Scott by five car lengths.
Sam Zoellner took his first checkered flag of the season in the 40-lap pure stock feature.
Zoellner got some help from pole-sitter Cory Fogleman and Kevin Wagner. The two bumped each other around on lap 38, causing the fourth caution of the race.
Wagner was black flagged and had to start in the back when racing resumed. Fogleman was forced to pit and finished 11th. Wagner finished 13th. by CNB
