I was filled with sorrow when I read about 6-year-old Tracy Williams who choked to death on a balloon.
As a CPR Instructor, my sadness is mixed with frustration at not being able to share the danger of balloons to more parents. Pediatric classes throughout the Hampton Roads area are often sparsely attended and occasionally canceled due to lack of students. Incorporated within pediatric CPR is extensive instruction on preventing childhood injuries and death. Common chokable items, including balloons, are reviewed.
Balloons are especially dangerous because they are nearly impossible to Heimlich maneuver out once inhaled. Balloons are also commonly given in goodie bags sent home from parties and nursery schools.
The average pediatric CPR class costs approximately $25 throughout the area. I tell my CPR students that taking CPR is like an insurance policy; it is something you may never need to use, but isn't it great to have the knowledge?
