HONORS, AWARDS
Teledyne Brown Engineering Hastings Instruments in Hampton was named in Research & Development magazine as one of the top 100 companies for research and technology for 1995. Teledyne developed a sensitive measurement instrument called the Hastings' Model 2000, a solid-state vacuum sensor. The wide-range digital vacuum meter is used to measure pressure as part of the quality testing phase of certain products or devices, from aerospace components to refrigerators.
United Way of South Hampton Roads received the Excellence in Service Quality Award sponsored by United Way of America. The award was made after reviewers from Boeing Co., IBM Corp. and the U.S. Department of Defense inspected the agency.
BUSINESS RENOVATIONS
Urban Retail Properties Co., the management and leasing company of Military Circle Mall, has hired Baltimore-based Whiting-Turner as the general contractor for the $10 million renovation of the mall.
NAME CHANGES
International Family Entertainment Inc. of Virginia Beach said it has changed the name of its Cable Health Club network to Fit TV. The 24-hour cable-TV network is distributed to 9.5 million homes. It features fitness and health programming.

Block Roofing Corp. in Norfolk received a $726,750 contract from the city of Chesapeake for reroofing Great Bridge Middle School.
Asphalt Roads & Materials Co. in Virginia Beach received a $773,046 contract for asphalt construction utility highway repairs and improvement for 1995-1997.
Pembroke Mall selected Brickell & Associates Public Relations of Virginia Beach to coordinate the 30th anniversary marketing campaign in October for the Virginia Beach mall.
