LARGEMOUTH BASS LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

While many anglers encountered slow action during the past week, there were two notable exceptions.

Joe Knott of Portsmouth boated a 9-pound, 6-ounce largemouth bass at a private pond in Suffolk. The minimum for a Virginia Freshwater Program citation is only eight pounds.

Gary Seay of Wilsonia Neck on the Eastern Shore caught two speckled trout topping the 5-pound minimum for a citation from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. He was at the entrance of a bayside creek.

Elsewhere, the charter boat High Hopes, skippered by David Wright, won the Ducks Unlimited billfish release tournament Friday and Saturday out of Rudee Inlet. Anglers on the boat released a blue marlin and a white marlin.

However, the 30-boat field produced only one blue and nine whites over the two days.
