Leo J. Pinkus, 94, died peacefully on Aug. 21, 1995, in a nursing home.
He was born in New York City and grew up in Elmira, N.Y. He was matriculated at Columbia University where he majored in Journalism from 1918-1922.
Mr. Pinkus worked on the editorial staff of the Paris Review in Germany in 1922. He was news editor of The Washington Times in 1929 and held various editorial positions on The Washington Times-Herald for 17 years. He did public relations for the United Jewish Appeal and worked for the Jewish Times for two years. During World War II he worked for the Office of War Information. For 27 years he worked as an editor for the United States Information Agency where he was Southeast Asian Bureau Chief.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gertrude, of 64 years; his son, Charles, and daughter-in-law, Connie, of Claremont, Calif.; and his daughter, Elsa, and son-in-law, Gerald Borman, of Norfolk; and seven grandchildren: Amy, Matthew, Paul, and Suzanne Pinkus and Reuben, Benjamin, and Peretz Borman.
Funeral was held at Ohr Kodesh Synogogue in Chevy Chase, Md. Burial was in King David Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Jewish Appeal.
