PATRIOTS OPTIMISTIC DESPITE LACK OF SIZE, SPEED VETERAN WEBSTER EXPECTS TO WIN SOME GAMES BUT KNOWS IT WON'T BE EASY.

Much in the same fashion as the Energizer Bunny, First Colonial football coach Frank Webster keeps on going . . . and going . . . and going. . .

And his teams keep winning . . . and winning . . . and winning.

Year in and year out for the past 29, Webster has always found a way to make his Patriots win. The veteran coach - who is 216-73-8 with the Patriots - has never had a losing season at First Colonial.

Some years, there is exceptional talent and it's easier. In others, when First Colonial isn't supposed to have much, the team sneaks up on everybody and captures a district title.

Surprising anyone is going to be much more difficult this season.

While there is always some talent in the skill positions, there aren't the numbers of years gone by. Nor is there the usual size.

But just being around a couple of practices, you get the feeling that somehow, some way, First Colonial will win at least more than half its football games.

The Patriots lost just three games last season - losing to Bayside by a field goal, to Kempsville by a touchdown and to eventual champion Green Run by 18. All came in the first four weeks of the season.

From there, First Colonial picked up the pace and won its last six games to secure another winning season.

Is it the stability of the coaching staff? Or the years of tradition?

Can Webster do it again this year?

``We're always optimistic,'' he said. ``But we have a lot of hard work ahead of us. We don't have many returning starters, only some people who saw plenty of playing time.

``If we can do well and get past the first couple of games, we'll be all right.''

The Patriots will have a strong kicking game with punter Corey Fogle and place kicker Jesse Harris. Fogle led the area with his 36.2 yards-a-punt average. Harris was second in the area in kick scoring with 44 points - one shy of tying for first - on 32 extra points and four field goals.

``Yes, we should have a good kicking game all around,'' Webster said. ``That's going to help us a lot.''

The Patriots lost their best returning running back when Marcus Wilcox transferred to Ocean Lakes.

``They've got a lot of our better players,'' Webster said. ``Watching them is almost like watching what we would have been.''

The move leaves Dione Olds as the top returner. Olds, a member of the family that has produced a few First Colonial greats, gained just 119 yards on 16 carries last year, but showed signs of brilliance on many of those attempts. Olds grew from 200 to 230 this season and is extremely fast.

``He could be one of the best in the area,'' Webster said. ``He's very strong.''

And he'll be expected to show lots of ability this season.

As usual, the sophomore will be joined by a host of promising backs - including linebacker/running back Anthony Jennette, Carlton Winston, Raymond Johnson, Lamar King, Michael Farraher, Sokhan Om and Cox transfer Javon.

Dorman Miner saw some time at quarterback last year and is the projected starter, although wide receiver Ted Smith can also call the plays. MEMO: [Special Section includes football teams for all area high schools.]
