MARLINS HAVE POTENTIAL, NEW QUARTERBACK KING IS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT STRONG RUNNING GAME, EXPERIENCED DEFENSE.

Bayside is coming off its sixth consecutive winning season, a streak that doesn't figure to end this year.

Whether that means a third straight 6-4 record or a return to the 11-2 glory of 1992 depends on how quickly new quarterback Jimmy Walker and an inexperienced offensive line develops.

Walker, a senior, has never played football but impressed coach Bill King with his quick mind and feet.

``He has a good feel for the position and throws a good ball,'' King said. ``He learns quickly, but we plan to keep it simple for him, especially for the first four or five games.''

That's not an easy stretch for the Marlins. They open against perennial Beach District contender First Colonial and then play two 1994 playoff teams, Green Run and Booker T. Washington.

``We expect to be very competitive, as always,'' King said. ``But anytime you have a new quarterback, it's wait and see. We have the talent and potential, no question. But we also lost 19 seniors. We'll have to see how it fits together.''

Bayside has the basis for a strong running game, which should take the pressure off of Walker, at least initially. Lamont Miller, the fullback and an all-district linebacker, rushed for 511 yards and five touchdowns last year. At 6-foot, 260 pounds, he's the ultimate short-yardage specialist.

Sharing the tailback positions is a pair of game-breakers, Chris Sherrod and Jermerll Ford. Ford rushed for 187 yards and Sherrod for 147 yards last season.

Bayside has more speed on the flanks with Warren Clark.

``We timed him in the 40 on the track the other day and coach (Lew) Turner had him at 4.31 and I had him at 4.24,'' King said.

Andy Callow (6-3, 205) isn't a sprint champ, but has good hands and can play tight end as well as wideout.

None of this may matter if the line doesn't come together. Junior center John Fuller (5-10, 240) is the only returning starter.

Seniors Jonathan Spruill (6-2, 275) and Ernie James (6-0, 185) should fill one tackle and guard, respectively. Derek James, a 6-foot, 280-pound senior, is an option at the other tackle if King wants to go big, and he also has three underclassmen - Blas Ossont (6-0, 210), Tony Copeland (6-1, 235) and Rondrick Smith (6-2, 240) - to choose from.

More settled is the defense where six starters return.

Spruill, James and end Osasa Crooke are back on the line. Miller and Mike Young (6-1, 205) are a formidable pair at linebacker and Ford returns in the secondary.

A pair of intriguing line prospects are Anthony ``Ant'' Mancillas and Jangsoo Peamoeller. Mancillas weighs only 160, but is very quick and surprisingly strong. King says Peamoeller reminds him of Gary Williams, another outstanding physical specimen who came out late in his career and developed into a college prospect.

Joining Ford in the secondary are Sherrod and Lenny Walden.

``They are all fast and they will all hit you,'' King said. ``This may be one the better secondaries I've had for overall speed, toughness and coachability.'' MEMO: [Special Section includes football teams for all area high schools.]
