Dr. Jock R. Wheeler, dean and provost of Eastern Virginia Medical School, has received the 1995 Physician Executive Award from the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
Given annually to a physician who is a member of the Medical Group Management Association's Society of Physicians in Administration, the award recognizes excellence in group practice administration. The award will be presented to Wheeler at the 69th annual conference of the Medical Group Management Association in New Orleans in October.
MILITARY PEOPLE
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Aileen M. Koke, daughter of Edyth O. Wall of the 7400 block of Tapley Ave., recently was selected as Petty Officer of the Month with Fighter Squadron 101, Naval Air Station Oceana.
Koke, a 1983 graduate of Maury High School, was chosen as the top performer from among all of the sailors assigned to the command and was cited for outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing. She joined the Navy in June of 1984.
Marine Pfc. Arthur T. Harvey, son of Mamie L. Harvey of Major Avenue, recently completed training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Gregory C. Hierholzer, son of Joel C. and Barbara A. Hierholzer of the 1800 block of Edgewood Ave., recently received the Navy Achievement Medal while assigned at Naval Air Station, Fallon, Nev. He was cited for superior performance of duty while serving as an explosives technician.
CAMPUS NOTES
Rene Perez-Lopez has been appointed vice president for information systems at Virginia Wesleyan College. Perez-Lopez will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing computing and information technology support, including library and media services.
Perez-Lopez, who joined the college staff in 1986 as director of library, will continue to serve in that position, along with his new responsibilities.
Estherine J. Harding has been appointed director of financial aid at Norfolk State University. With the appointment, Harding assumes responsibility for management of the university's student financial aid operation, which administers the award of approximately $35 million in state and federal assistance to more than 6,500 students. She will supervise a staff of 15 professional and 10 student workers.
A native of Emporia, Harding graduated from Norfolk State in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in executive office administration. Upon graduation, she joined the university staff in the office of financial aid, where she had worked for most of her years as a student. In 1986, she earned a master of arts degree in urban education from the university.
Jennifer Francher Bonney, a 1988 graduate of Granby High School, received a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Old Dominion University. Bonney, who graduated with honors, is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Psi Chi national honor societies. She has been accepted into the master's degree program in psychology at ODU.
