Thirteen Norfolk schools will see different faces in the principal's office this year. Newly assigned principals for 1995-96 are:

FRANK L. STEADMAN Norview Middle School Age: 48.

Previous education work experience: Principal at Northside Middle School, 1985-91; teacher at Azalea Gardens Middle School, 1991-95; teacher, counselor and assistant principal, 1972-85.

Education: B.S., secondary education (history and social studies), and M.S., guidance, Old Dominion University; additional graduate study in administration (42 hours), Old Dominion.

Goals for your school:

1. Improve academic performance of students, especially on Literacy Passport Test.

2. Create a safer, more disciplined environment.

3. Increase parental involvement.

WINIFRED L. REID St. Helena Elementary School Age: (not provided).

Previous education work experience: Teacher at Tarrallton Elementary for 11 years and Larrymore Elementary for two years; science teacher specialist for two years; instructional specialist for one year; and assistant principal for four years.

Education: Attended local public schools, B.S. and master's degree in education from Norfolk State University.

Goals for your school:

1. Provide a nurturing and challenging environment that will foster a student's desire to learn, a belief that he/she has the ability to think critically, solve problems and give input in designing learning.

2. Provide staff development, materials and equipment that will enable teachers to maximize instruction, producing meaningful, active learning experiences that will last for a lifetime.

LONNIE R. ``PETE'' SYKES JR. Mary Calcott Elementary Age: 45.

Previous education work experience: Art teacher, art history teacher specialist, and instructional specialist at Lindenwood Elementary, 1990-92. Assistant principal at Willard Model Elementary, 1992-95.

Education: B.S., art education, and M.S. and C.A.S. Education Administration and Supervision, Old Dominion University.

1. To create a positive and challenging learning environment where students meet with success each day.

NOAH V. ROGERS Azalea Gardens Middle School Age: 36

Education: A.B., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; M.A., Norfolk State University.

Goals for your school: To create an atmosphere conducive for teaching and learning. Azalea Gardens Middle School will:

MELANIE R. YULES Rosemont Middle School Age: 42.

Previous education work experience: Assistant Principal, Booker T. Washington High School, 1991-95; senior coordinator, Special Education Programs, Norfolk Public Schools, 1986-91.

Education: Ed.D., education administration, Virginia Tech; M.A., special education, mental retardation; and B.S., education K-8 and severe and profoundly handicapped.

Goals for your school: Through the three R's of Respect, Responsibility and Reliability, Rosemont students and staff will learn in an atmosphere conducive to academic achievement and development of moral character.

DELORES E. RAY WILSON Poplar Halls Elementary School Age: (not provided).

Previous education work experience: Principal at Lindenwood Elementary, Granby Elementary, Diggs Park Elementary, Campostella Elementary and Poplar Halls Elementary schools; teacher, Diggs Park Elementary; instructional leader and reading teacher at Richard A. Tucker; and instruction specialist for the Norfolk public school system.

Education: B.S., Norfolk State University; M.A., Columbia University; and Ed.D. Virginia Tech.

Goals for your school:

1. To implement instructional programs and practices that will require students to engage in rigorous academic pursuits and challenge themselves to work hard to achieve a positive, wholesome and productive future. With such instructional programs, each child will develop basic skills and concepts commensurate with his abilities as observed and monitored through the use of assessment measures.

2. To provide students, teachers and all staff members with a secure school by implementing safe and secure initiatives to bring about a disciplined school environment. These initiatives will provide a positive school climate conducive to teaching and learning.

3. To make Poplar Halls Elementary School community feel that the community is an important part of the school family. Therefore, we will encourage parents and volunteers to participate in school activities.

MICHAEL C. SPENCER Maury High School Age: 44.

Previous education work experience: Teacher, assistant principal, principal, mathematics specialist, curriculum coordinator, and public information officer for the Portsmouth public school system.

FRAN DUGAN Campostella Elementary School Age: 51.

Previous education work experience: Thirty years in the field of education. Worked within the Norfolk school system for the past seven years at Tidewater Park, Oceanair, Little Creek and Campostella. Previously worked within the parochial school system.

Education: Elementary education undergraduate degree, University of the District of Columbia; master's, elementary school, Old Dominion University.

Goals for your school:

1. Further achievement in reading, writing and problem-solving through the use of instructional technology, one-on-one instruction and support, wide reading and parent development.

2. Development of a deeper bond with the community that will welcome parents, businesses and civic leaders to our school.

TIMOTHY M. SWEENEY Northside Middle School Age: 42.

Previous education work experience: Health and P.E. teacher and dean of students at Lake Taylor Middle; dean of students at Ballentine School; assistant principal, Granby High; basketball coach at Maury High, Norfolk Catholic High and Granby High (Eastern District Champions in 1995). Director of AAU program for Norfolk.

Education: B.S. in health and physical education and M.S. in administration, Old Dominion University; C.A.S. program, Old Dominion University.

Goals for your school: To provide each student at Northside a safe, caring and supportive environment that will enable them to pursue academic excellence in the classroom. Our kids are our greatest asset, and I feel each and every student, regardless of background, can be successful in life and accomplish his or her goals. All students will strive toward academic rigor . . . to explore topics and gain knowledge far beyond their expectations. I believe in very high standards of behavior. Learning can only take place in a caring, friendly environment that is orderly and structured without being rigid. I also believe it is imperative to involve the parents and community. . . . Education is a shared responsibility. We don't do it all, and the parents don't do it all. We work together with the parents and the community to see that our children are learning.

EDWARD L. JOHNSON Jacox Elementary School Age: (not provided).

Previous work experience: Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher for the Norfolk public school system; principal, Adult Learning Center Evening School; and assistant principal at Oceanair, Ingleside and Bayview elementary schools.

Education: B.S. degree, Winston-Salem State University; master's, school administration, University of Virginia; additional graduate study at Old Dominion University.

Goals for your school: To encourage and require students to engage in rigorous academic pursuit and challenge themselves to work hard to achieve a positive, wholesome and productive future. We want our school to be a focal point of community activity. Therefore, we encourage and invite meaningful parental and volunteer participation in school activities.

CHARLES A. STEVENSON III Sherwood Forest Elementary Age: 65.

Previous work experience: Held positions at Campostella Heights Elementary, Robert E. Lee Elementary, Poplar Halls Elementary, Stuart Elementary, Sewells Point Elementary and Chesterfield Elementary.

Education: B.A., College of William and Mary, Norfolk Division; master's, education, University of Virginia; C.A.S., Old Dominion University; and postgraduate studies, Virginia Tech.

Goals for your school: To further improve the educational program for all students at Sherwood Forest, using the latest instructional techniques.

JACQUELINE S. MOORE Norfolk Preparatory High School Age: 48.

Previous work experience: Twenty-six years in Norfolk public school system. Teacher for grades 1-5, Spiral grades 5; 3-4 combination, 6, 7-8 combination and 6-8 HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills); Camp Young Summer School grades 3 and 4; Lake Taylor Middle summer basic skills 6 and 7; Summer Center leader Ruffner Middle School; Title 1 instructional specialist and elementary Specialist.

Education: B.S., elementary education, and M.A., communications, Norfolk State University; 30 hours in administration, Old Dominion University; and third year doctoral student in educational leadership, Nova University.

Goals for your school:

1. To provide a setting for older students returning to school that promotes study, learning, ambition and success through positive attitudes of faculty and staff, the use of technology and relevant ``hands on'' instruction.

2. To use the TQM management model to create a unified system (teachers, community, businesses and parents) focused on the success of each returning student.

DEBORAH L. MANSFIELD Chesterfield Academy of Math, Science and Technology Mansfield Age: 44.

Previous work experience: Taught primary classes, both regular and Chapter I science, for five years; one year as an eighth- and ninth-grade remedial math teacher; one year as a general helping teacher at central administration; three years at Ghent, two as a Spiral teacher; two years as a general teacher specialist; 2.5 years as a secondary science teacher specialist; 1.5 years as an assistant principal at Calcott; and six years as principal at Calcott.

Goals for your school:

1. To deliver an instructional program that ensures academic rigor while providing extra opportunities to excel in the areas of math, science and technology.
