SOUTHAMPTON BOASTS TALENTED BACKFIELD WILLIAM BROWN, A 225-POUND FULLBACK, RETURNS FOR HIS SENIOR SEASON TO HEAD UP THE INDIAN OFFENSE.

Southampton coach Littleton Parker claims it's too early to predict the outcome of the 1995 season. He says his Bay Rivers' co-champion Indians - despite a 43-man roster - still have a few gaps to fill.

``We haven't really settled on those interior people,'' said Parker, who returns for his eighth year as head coach after taking over the Indians at the end of the 1986 season. ``We're going to have to play some real good football. The district is real tough this year.''

But all questions have been answered in the backfield, where the Indians boast some of the top talent around.

``We're going to be real strong in the backfield,'' Parker said. ``But we still have a lot of work to do.''

William Brown, a 5-foot-11, 225-pound fullback, returns for his senior season to head up the Indian offense. Brown, who also will play on the defensive line, scored 21 touchdowns and raced for more than 1,000 yards en route to the Indians' 6-1 district finish.

``He's a pretty good fullback,'' Parker said. ``They're just going to have to try and stop 'em. He does a lot of things - he kicks off, punts, everything.''

But Parker says Brown, who earned all district, region and state honors, won't be Southampton's only ground weapon.

Also returning in the backfield are 5-11, 205-pound Kenneth Williams at setback and Rico Ivey, a 6-0, 175-pound junior tailback, who earned honorable mention all district last season. Williams and Ivey also will start at linebacker and safety, respectively.

Brad Davis, who stepped in to quarterback the Indians midway through the season, also returns.

``He did an outstanding job for us,'' Parker said of the 5-9, 160-pound senior. ``He's a team leader and throws the ball real well. He does a good job running the offense.''

Davis took over the starting job when Chris Applewhite was injured in the Indians' only district loss of the season, a 31-0 shelling by York. But Davis then guided the Indians to four straight wins - for the season, the Indians posted three shutouts and held their opponents to only one touchdown three times - before falling to Motoaco, 26-6, in the Group AA, Division 3, Region I semi-finals.

Rounding out the returnees are juniors Myron Rawlings, a 6-2, 260-pound center; Armad Phillips, 6-3, 270-pound tackle; and Duran Parker, a 5-10, 180-pound split end and outside linebacker.

Parker expects the Indians will further their air game, utilizing newcomer Greg Scott (6-4, 210-pound sophomore) and Duran Parker.

``We're going to throw the ball some,'' Parker said. ``Greg Scott's got real big hands and Duran Parker, he does a great job at split end.'' ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by MICHAEL KESTNER
