Avondale Industries Inc. has teamed up with Bath Iron Works to bid to build a new class of amphibious transport ships for the Navy. The Navy plans to order 12 of the vessels starting next year in the most significant new surface ship program planned for the next five years. Newport News Shipbuilding has said it wants to build some of the ships. New Orleans-based Avondale is expected to win the contract since it has built many of the Navy's amphibious ships. Under the alliance, the ships would be built at Avondale and at Bath's shipyard in Bath, Maine. Hughes Aircraft would handle total ship system integration for the two yards. Bath is being bought by General Dynamics Corp., the parent of sub-maker Electric Boat. (Staff and wire reports) by CNB
