With an increase in fatal motor vehicle accidents this summer and the looming volume of Labor Day weekend traffic, state police on Wednesday advised motorists to buckle up.
Statistics show 17 fatal crashes resulted in 23 deaths in Southeastern Virginia between July 4 and August 28. Of those, 19 victims had the chance to wear seat belts, but 16 did not use them.
According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 376 fatal crashes between Jan. 1 and Aug. 7 in Virginia. In those accidents, 264 victims had not been using seat belts.
