MONITOR KEEPS ITS PROPELLER ANOTHER DAY

Mechanical problems prevented divers Wednesday from recovering the propeller of a Civil War ironclad and delayed the mission one more day.

Blue skies and calmer seas allowed a Navy ship to begin the careful task of removing the largest wreckage fragment so far from the Monitor, which sank off the Outer Banks in 1862. Weather wasn't the problem this time.

An air hose on the deck of the Edenton that fed oxygen to the cutting torch below the ocean's surface ruptured twice on two different dives. The divers couldn't remain under water for the length of time it took to make the repairs. by CNB
