Families who qualify for free and reduced-price meals in local schools need to submit a new application to participate in the program, says Dare County schools child nutrition director Pat Fearing.
``Those students who qualified for the program last year are automatically eligible to participate the first 10 days of this school year,'' Fearing explained. ``After that, the family needs to submit a new application for this year.''
Next Thursday marks the 10th school day.
The national school lunch and school breakfast programs allow eligible students to purchase meals at reduced prices, or in some cases, at no charge. Locally, meal prices are as follows: Student breakfast, 50 cents; adults, $1. Reduced-price breakfast, 30 cents. Lunch for grades K-5 costs $1.24, grades 6-12, $1.50; adults, $2.50. Extra milk is 30 cents a carton. Reduced lunch is 40 cents.
Application forms for the program have been sent home with a letter to parents or guardians. To apply, the application should be filled out and returned to the school the child attends. Additional applications are available in each cafeteria or from the school guidance office.
