A second shipment of weapons-grade uranium fuel rods could be on its way to the Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal in Brunswick County as early as October.
The first shipment of nuclear fuel rods arrived at the terminal in September 1994, then was taken to the Savannah River nuclear facility in South Carolina by rail.
The U.S. Department of Energy said Wednesday that plans are underway for the second shipment and that Sunny Point will be the point of entry.
``We have the experience of working with the people of Sunny Point, N.C., and we have that team that we had last year still in place,'' said DOE spokesman Jim Giusti.
The rods in Switzerland and Greece could be loaded into containers beginning as early as next week.
South Carolina has fought a lengthy legal battle to keep the second shipment from being delivered to the Savannah River site.
The legal fight has not ended, but DOE is going ahead with plans. by CNB
