Sen. Jesse Helms' wife has proved that she can attack political opponents the best of them.
Dorothy Helms, speaking at a fundraising luncheon for her husband Wednesday, mentioned that Democrat Harvey Gantt ``is not raising money and maybe some of you wonder why. Well, he doesn't need it. He has the homosexuals and the lesbians and the labor unions and the militant women right ready to put some money wherever he needs it.''
Gantt, who was defeated by Helms in the 1990 campaign, has announced his candidacy for the Senate seat. Mrs. Helms did not mention Charles Sanders, the former head of Glaxo who also is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 1996 election.
About 25 people attended the luncheon. by CNB
