SCC HAS EXTENDED PERIOD TO COMMENT ON GTE RATES

The State Corporation Commission said it has extended a public comment period on GTE Corp.'s proposed rate restructuring because the phone company's mailing to customers about the planned changes was confusing.

Under the proposal, GTE would expand the no-toll local calling areas for many of its customers, but increase basic monthly charges for most. Rates for directory assistance and pay-phone calls would also rise, but GTE would lower what it charges long-distance phone companies to complete long-distance calls.
