Late in the season opener Thursday against Princess Anne, Marcus Wilcox pounded out the biggest yard in Ocean Lakes' short football history.
Down 27-22 with 1:23 left to play, on fourth-and-goal from the 1, the First Colonial senior transfer barreled in behind the right guard for a 28-27 Dolphins lead. Quarterback Walter Amos then passed to Torrell Cherry on the conversion to give Ocean Lakes a 3-point edge that sent the Dolphins sidelines into a frenzy.
``That's right, that probably was the biggest yard in school history,'' coach Jim Prince said. ``We called time out and decided to give it to the senior.''
The victory was a huge turn-around from last season, when the Cavaliers thrashed Ocean Lakes, 56-0, in the Dolphins inaugural game.
``Turnaround?'' asked Prince. ``Slightly.''
Ocean Lakes had taken an early 3-0 lead on Frankie Knox's 27-yard field goal, but trailed the rest of the game.
The Dolphins trailed, 27-16, after Mike Majette's 4-yard run with 3:27 left in the third quarter. But Chad Holland sped up the comeback with a 50-yard kickoff return. Amos passed nine yards to Henry Matthews six plays later to close the gap to 27-22.
Ocean Lakes then got a little luck when Sheron Joseph recovered Rodney Barr's fumble with 6:17 left to play, leaving the Dophins with 52 yards to go for the victory. Amos' 24-yard pass to Matthews on fourth and eight gave Ocean Lakes a first and goal from the Cavaliers 8.
Wilcox's winning score overshadowed a fine performance by backfield mate Holland - who carried 16 times for 190 yards that included touchdown runs of 56 and 70 yards. Wilcox had 96 yards.
Majette led the Cavaliers with 113 yards on 21 attempts. by CNB
