J.H. SPEIGHT

J.H. Speight, 79, died Aug. 31, 1995.

He was a native of Suffolk and the son of the late Mary Jones Speight and John Harvey Speight. He had been a Hampton resident since 1941.

Mr. Speight retired in 1980 after 40 years of service as a shipfitter supervisor in the Newport News Shipyard. He was a mason in the Monitor Lodge (NU)197 of Phoebus, and a member of the First United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Lowe Speight; a son and his wife, Wayne and Hope Speight of Hampton; a daughter, Paige Hill of Hampton; three grandsons, Chad Speight and his wife, Sue, of Madison, Wis., Bruce Speight and Cody Hill; and one great-granddaughter, Amelia Mattison Speight; three sisters, Mary Moore, Margaret Glaus and Helen Savage of Suffolk; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Thomas Speight of Suffolk.

The family received friends Friday, Sept. 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in the funeral home, followed by burial in Parklawn Cemetery, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First United Church of Christ, Hampton.
