VIRGINIA BEACH

THREE RESCUED IN STORM: A sailboat foundered in stormy weather near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Friday night, but the three people aboard were able to make it to a tunnel island, where they were rescued.

The boat, the Summer's Dream, ran into trouble just after 9 p.m. when it was buffeted by 7-foot seas and 45 mph winds. The boat began taking on water, the Coast Guard said, and the people aboard opted to abandon ship.

All were wearing life vests and were able to swim to the South Island of the tunnel, where they were picked up by a police boat.

They were taken to Sentara Bayside Hospital for checkups. Their names were not released.

The fate of the boat, which was home to one of the three people, was not known.

DARA PROSECUTION RESTS: The prosecution rested its case Friday in the murder trial of Kelly Dara, accused in the killing of Salem High School classmate Joseph D. Garcia III.

Defense attorneys will present their case Tuesday, and the jury may begin deliberations that day. Dara faces a possible life term.

Garcia died March 6 from a stab wound to his back that punctured his lung. Dara and her boyfriend, Joshua Johnson, were charged in the death.

Johnson was convicted in June of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery, and a jury recommended that he receive life in prison. He is to be sentenced Wednesday.

NORFOLK MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO STABBING: A Navy man pleaded guilty Friday to the fatal stabbing of another man in November 1994.

Gerald Rivera, 21, was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. He will be sentenced Oct. 27.

Rivera was convicted of the Nov. 25, 1994 stabbing of 20-year-old Andreis Orque during a fight in the 1000 block of Meads Road, records show. Rivera served aboard the carrier George Washington at the time of the murder.

The dispute was apparently over a woman, police said.

ACCOMAC MAN CHARGED WITH ARMS, DRUG POSSESSION: A South Carolina man was arrested this week after a deputy found marijuana and several semi-automatic weapons in a hidden compartment in his car, the Accomack County Sheriff's Department reported.

Crockett Tyrone Bowman, 25, of Ridgeway, S.C., was arrested on Wednesday when Deputy Billy Murphy made a routine traffic stop on Route 13 near Parksley. A drug-sniffing dog found the compartment under the rear seat, according to Sheriff Robert Crockett.

Bowman was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a stolen weapon and possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony. He was held in the Accomack County Jail without bail.

ISLE OF WIGHT MARIJUANA PLANTS SEIZED: Marijuana plants valued at $112,000 were confiscated Friday by Isle of Wight Sheriff's deputies from a wooded patch in the Central Hill area.

Charges are pending against an area man.

Sheriff's Deputy Timmy Worrell said the investigation started last December, when a hunter notified police that he had found several tomato cages in the woods.

He said deputies in June found marijuana plants 8- to 10-inches high. Police raided the area and removed 112 plants.

In a separate, unrelated investigation, state police arrested Edward C. West, 25, of Smithfield, on Aug. 25 for growing 25 marijuana plants in a wooded area behind St. Luke's Cemetery in Isle of Wight. by CNB
