Greenbrier Christian Academy superintendent Ron White may not be a popular person on campus this week.
Benedictine was awarded a 14-0 victory with 6:35 remaining in the second period after White and the officials agreed to call the Gators' home opener after a 45-minute delay due to severe thunderstorms.
White said a weather update revealed that lightning would stay in the area for at least 90 minutes and maybe two hours when the game was stopped at approximately 8:45 p.m.
``When the game is called, it is a win for the team that is winning and a loss for the team that is losing,'' White said. ``It was a strange way to open the season.''
The superintendent had the safety of the players in mind in reaching his decision.
``Instead of having the kids get injured, the game was called,'' White said.
Gators coach Ronnie McGuire was bewildered by the decision. ``Can you call a game with six-something left in the second period?'' he wondered. ``I don't know. I've never been in a game like this.''
Benedictine coach Gregg Whisler, obviously pleased that his team is 2-0 and yet to allow a point in 1995, said it was his understanding that a game can be called when the home team and officials agree.
When the teams met last year, Greenbrier led, 14-0, at halftime before Benedictine rallied for a 28-21 victory.
