GREAT BRIDGE'S 10-YEAR GOLF WIN STREAK STOPPED

In all honesty, Richard Cox doesn't think the best team won.

``Their kids are better golfers, they've got five guys who hardly ever shoot out of the 70s,'' the Deep Creek golf coach said after his Hornets ended Great Bridge's 10-year regular-season win streak with a 331-341 victory in a Southeastern District match Thursday at Seven Springs. ``It was just a case of them having a bad day and us having our best day ever. ``I knew it was possible too for us to win on the very first hole when two guys hit long drives straight down the middle and another guy bounced one off a shed and back into the fairway.''

The Hornets turned their fast start off the first tee into a 13-stroke lead at the turn, then held off a Great Bridge challenge.

Chris Huntzinger led the way for Deep Creek, earning medalist honors with a 76. Jeremy Carroll added a 77. Damon Knox shot 88 and Jacob Estes 90 for the Hornets.

In girls basketball:

Norfolk Academy 70, York 54: Kendra Robins scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the second quarter as Norfolk Academy cruised on day two of the inaugural Girls Varsity Basketball Tipoff at Norfolk Collegiate.

The victory helped the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools teams continue their mastery over Bay Rivers District opposition in the three-day classic. The TCIS teams have gone 5-1 against the Bay Rivers District heading into today's final three games.

The Falcons trailed by only two after one quarter before Robins caught fire and fueled the Norfolk Academy surge. The Lady Bulldogs outscored York, 26-10, in the second quarter.

Stephanie York added 16 points for Norfolk Academy - four in each quarter.

In other Tipoff games:

Norfolk Collegiate 46, Poquoson 22: Guards Elizabeth Swearingen and Carol Baker keyed a suffocating Norfolk Collegiate defense which held Poquoson to only three points in the second half.

Melanie Sandford scored a team-high 12 points for Norfolk Collegiate, eight in the second quarter.

Nansemond-Suffolk 64, Bruton 31: Eleven Saints scored at least a point in the rout and the Panthers were held to four points or less in each of the first three quarters. by CNB
