CAMDEN OPENER SHOWS LAST SEASON WASN'T FLUKE

Out to prove that last year's 6-5 season was not a fluke, the Camden County Bruins dominated the second half of their season opener Aug. 25 to pound Jamesville 24-6 in high school football action.

Camden led just 3-0 at the half thanks to a 20-yard field goal by Kevin Dodson in the first quarter. Then the Bruins opened up the running game in the second half.

Ryan Allen, playing his first game ever at quarterback, rushed for two straight touchdowns in the third quarter, one from one yard out and the other from 15 yards out. Camden's third touchdown came in the fourth quarter when David Clark scored on a one-yard run.

Clark finished the game with 103 yards rushing on just 10 carries.

Camden played the game without one of their best players, Joel Taylor (running back), who was out with a sprained ankle.

Camden head coach Scott Jones was happy with the team's defensive play in the second half and improvement by Allen at quarterback.

``Defensively in the second half we really stepped it up and outhit Jamesville,'' he said. ``Ryan (Allen) also stepped it up and read the option better.''

Jones was predicting a much closer outcome in the Bruins' initial outing.

``They (Jamesville) had Chocowinity beat the week before,'' Jones noted. ``Chocowinity won the game 16-13 on the final play of the game. I figured it would come down to a field goal by Kevin Dodson.''

Jones felt that Allen performed well under the pressure of his first game.

``He has won the varsity job. We'll just have to wait and see what happens,'' Jones said. ``Option quarterback is tough and it's a lot to ask a young kid . . . to make split-second decisions every time he touches the ball.''

Jones hopes to build confidence in his young team week to week and make believers out of those who say last year's season was a fluke.

``I feel like we have a pretty good group of kids and that we do a pretty good job of coaching.'' by CNB
