BEATLES WIN INFOLINE ``HALL'' POLL

THE BEATLES turned up at No. 1 in an Infoline survey of Hampton Roads' choices for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, followed by Led Zeppelin.

The Beatles were inducted into the Hall in 1988, with John Lennon receiving a second membership in 1994. Zeppelin entered this year. To be enshrined, an artist must have released a record at least 25 years ago.

The Infoline Hall of Fame Top Five (or Six) is completed by the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and, in a tie for fifth, Jimi Hendrix and Pearl Jam.

The highly personal nature of slicing the rock pie played a big role in Thursday's voting. One caller chose the '50s trifecta of Little Richard, Fats Domino and ``Jerry Lewis.'' Another picked the '60s' holy trinity - the Beatles, the Stones and Bob Dylan. All are members. Well, Jerry Lee Lewis is.

Quirkier would-be nominees included Johnny ``Guitar'' Watson, the Village People, Abba, the Incredible String Band, Tool, and Willie Nelson. Why not? Johnny Cash made it, and Nelson did command a huge audience of rockers during his ``outlaw'' days. As Stella of Hampton, who also voted for the already-inducted Elvis and Elton John, put it, Willie ``does a little of everything.''

One Virginia Beach reader went for War, Rare Earth and Earth, Wind and Fire, three '70s rock-funk outfits with millions of record sales among them. None are Hall of Fame members. On the other hand, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, who got the nod from a Norfolk fan of great singing, are.

Not eligible yet, whether by a few years or many, are Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana, Garth Brooks, R.E.M., Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss, the Ramones, Talking Heads, Green Day, Husker Du, Live, Alice in Chains, and X. They all received nods here. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
