Frances Smith Greene, 88, of N. West St., died Sept. 3, 1995, in her home. She was the widow of Arthur W. Greene and the daughter of the late Dr. John and Frances Smith of Branchville, Va.
Mrs. Greene was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church where she was a former deaconess and a leader of the Women's Missionary Union. She was the oldest past president of the Ahoskie Woman's Club and chaired many committees of that organization. Mrs. Greene was also very active in the North Carolina Federation of Woman's Clubs.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Daniel Brown Rather of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons, Daniel Greene Rather and Pratt Smith Rather, both of Atlanta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pat Greene Rather, and a sister, Mildred Weadock.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ahoskie First Baptist Church by Dr. Jesse J. Croom. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie First Baptist Church, Main Street, Ahoskie, N.C. 29710, or to Salem Academy and College, Pat Greene Rather Student Development Fund, P.O. Box 10548, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27108. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is handling arrangements.
