Warnie Conley, Jr., the assistant golf pro at Stumpy Lake Golf Course, told Dick Ogden that he didn't have a game.
That's debatable after Ogden's putt on the 16th hole.
Ogden made a superb 40-foot putt and never looked back in capturing the 18th annual Tidewater Amateur Golf Tournament Sunday. The Chesapeake resident shot a 6-under-par 138 in beating his closest competition, Billy Judah, by two strokes.
The 46-year-old played his best round ever at the Stumpy Lake course by shooting a blistering 67 and capturing his first Tidewater Amateur.
Ogden, who has won the Hampton Open, the Hampton Amateur and the Outer Banks Invitational in Nags Head, N.C., says it's a special feeling to win this tournament.
He's been trying to win it since its inception in 1978.
``It's prestigious,'' said Ogden of winning the tournament. ``It's nice to be recognized as a local player who can play. It means all the things that are good (about golf).''
Judah, J.P. Leigh, Bill Christian, Fred Saxton were in contention when Ogden made his birdie on the par-3 hole. It turned out to be the the deciding putt because Ogden went ahead to stay.
``It was probably 40 feet,'' Ogden said. ``I wasn't trying to do anything special. It was a good putt to make. I just wanted to get it on the green and make the hole. I knew I could make that one but it was luck that it went in.''
For his effort, Ogden received a $500 gift certification that can be used anytime during the next six months at the golf course's clubhouse.
Others receiving $500 gift certificates for winning their respective flights include Championship B victor Roger Savage; First Flight A champ Glenn Raines; Second Flight A's Barry Herbert; Third Flight A's Scott Kattwinkel; Fourth Flight A's Zackery Smith; First Flight B's Roger Allen; Second Flight B's Jim Jordan; Third Flight B's Leroy Miller; Fourth Flight B's Bob Perry and Fifth Flight's Thomas Coates. by CNB
