In response to David R. Lyons' letter (The Sun, Aug. 6) condemning the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors for not funding the sheriff's budget: He doesn't know the facts.
Not only do the supervisors fully fund the sheriff's budget, but they supplement it by about $100,000 annually. This supplement is for five extra deputy positions above what the state supplies.
Even with this additional aid by the supervisors, the sheriff still charged the county $10,000 in overtime deputy pay for the county fair last year. Good budget management would have allowed these five extra deputies, which are totally paid for by county funds, to have worked the county fair.
I commend our supervisors for going the extra mile in keeping our county safe. The problem is not the lack of funds, but their inefficient management.

Candidate for sheriff,
Isle of Wight County Don't rezone
Again before us comes an attempt at rezoning our quiet residential area. How many times must we fight this battle?
Last evening my mailbox was damaged in what I believe was an attempt to scare me into keeping quiet on this matter.
No! We do not want our rural residential areas zoned to industrial use.
Every county in Virginia is required to have a comprehensive plan for its land use. Isle of Wight County has such a plan, and therein are established guidelines, which have been mapped out and stand posted in our county offices.
Our area near and around Hunt Club Road is a quiet, rural, residential/-agricultural area and is designated to be reserved as such. We are an off-highway community, and many of us settled here feeling that we were leaving behind the hustle and bustle noises of big city and industry. We would like to keep it that way, and we believe that if the recommendations as set forth in the county's comprehensive plan are followed, we will be allowed to continue the enjoyment of our quiet and serene neighborhoods.
I can only ask our commissioners and supervisors, what is a plan worth if we don't follow its guidelines? And if you allow this rezoning of our residential area to industrial, then what will happen to all the rest of our residential areas in this county? Where does it stop?
On this matter I would like to ask all of you concerned citizens to speak out. Please speak loud and clear about what you want in this matter.

The purpose of the event is to promote our area restaurants and eateries to the entire Hampton Roads area. Food vendors donate their time, effort and great expense to make the function successful.
