The estate of E. Claiborne Robins Sr. will give an estimated $35 million to the University of Richmond, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported today.
University President Richard L. Morrill and a source familiar with Robins' estate confirmed the donation Tuesday, the newspaper said.
Robins died in July at 84. He had built his family's Richmond drug store and tiny pharmaceutical business into an international corporate giant. Robins put the university on the map in 1969 with the announcement of a $50 million gift that still ranks among the 20 largest to an American university by a living donor.
``During the last 50 years, Claiborne Robins has been a second founder of this university, so dramatic has been his philanthropy,'' Morrill said.
The bequest will bring the Robins family's contributions to the private school over the last 25 years to $160 million. by CNB
