More than 30 Navy personnel and their families were evacuated to Norfolk on Tuesday from the Caribbean island of Antigua as Hurricane Luis bore down on it with wind gusts up to 146 mph.
Eleven military members and 20 civilians were flown to Norfolk Naval Station and given temporary shelter at the Navy Lodge and at naval base quarters.
About 30 active-duty personnel remained on Antigua in an Air Force shelter, said Senior Chief Petty Officer Ted Brown, a spokesman for the Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk. The Navy maintains a support base on the 170-square-mile island.
Meanwhile, naval personnel at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, were preparing for the hurricane as well, Brown said.
