SPOT SAW THEIR WAY CLEAR TO BEAT FINS OUT OF TOWN

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair Tuesday. Clear water inshore slowed spot fishing, which had been good for more than two weeks.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught a few spot, pompano and several speckled trout.

Pompano were taken in fairly good quantities from Avalon Pier on fresh shrimp and sand fleas. Some nice sea mullet and a few speckled trout also were taken.

Nags Head Pier reported a few bluefish taken early in the morning. A few Spanish mackerel were landed later from the end of the pier on jiggers.

Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught some pompano during the morning and quite a few spot from the south side of the pier during the afternoon.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier landed plenty of pompano, a few spot and some sea mullet close to the beach during the morning. A few bottom fish were taken in the afternoon.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a handful of mullet and spot taken. Only a few small bottom fish were landed on Avon Pier because of choppy seas. Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier with only a few pompano taken.

Surf fishing along the northern beaches was good, with plenty of pompano, scattered mullet and a few spot beached from deeper sloughs.

Small bottom fish, tailor bluefish and a few flounder were landed around Oregon Inlet. Some bottom fish were taken along the beach from Rodanth to Buxton, but fishing was generally slow because of big seas.

Puppy drum and small bluefish were taken during the morning at Cape Point, while small flounder and a few nice mullet were landed along the beach on the south side of Cape Point. Small bluefish were taken around Hatteras Inlet.

A few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken by half-day charters fishing around Oregon Inlet. Outside the inlet, trolling was good for small king mackerel. Most of the kings were taken on Drone spoons pulled deep behind planers.

Scattered tuna and a few dolphin were landed in the Gulf Stream northeast of Oregon Inlet. Seven billfish were released.

Dolphin fishing was good off Hatteras. A few wahoo were taken, but billfish were scarce.

Pompano fishing should remain good along the oceanfront as long as the water inshore remains warm and fairly clear.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
