U.S. Rep. Norman Sisisky is recovering at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals after surgery last week to remove part of his colon and a cancerous growth there, a spokeswoman for the congressman said Wednesday.
Doctors found no evidence the cancer has spread to other organs, said the spokeswoman, Alice Alonge. As a precaution, Sisisky is having chemotherapy, she said.
Sisisky, 68, a Democrat representing the 4th District, entered the hospital Aug. 28, three days after the growth was discovered in a routine examination. He expects to be discharged by the end of the week, Alonge said, and will recuperate at his Petersburg home.
Despite his illness, Sisisky intends to run next year for an eighth term, Alonge said. His district includes portions of Chesapeake and Portsmouth and extends west from those cities to Goochland County. by CNB
