PIER FISHING SPOTTY BUT HEADBOATS DO WELL

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was spotty Wednesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier fishermen experienced a slow day, catching only a few pompano. Pompano, spot and undersized puppy drum were taken during the morning on Avalon Pier.

Some Spanish mackerel were landed from the end of Nags Head Pier on jiggers early in the day. A few speckled trout and pompano were taken later.

Jennette's Pier reported a few Spanish mackerel and bluefish decked early in the day, and fairly good spot fishing during the afternoon.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught spot, sea mullet, a few pompano and a 6-pound, 12-ounce albacore.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught some nice-sized sea mullet and a few spot.

Avon Pier reported slow fishing. A few keeper flounder and two 5-pound puppy drum were landed on Frisco Pier.

Scattered pompano, a few mullet and spot were beached in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet.

Some 5- to 7-pound puppy drum were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Puppy drum, a few bluefish and scattered pompano were taken at Cape Point.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet improved Wednesday, with some Spanish mackerel and bluefish landed.

Headboats around Oregon Inlet and in the sound caught fair numbers of croaker, a few sea mullet and small gray grout.

Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Wednesday. Some yellowfin tuna of mixed sizes were taken by charter craft northeast of the inlet. Billfishing was slow.

Dolphin were plentiful off Hatteras. A few wahoo also were taken. But billfishing was slow.

Anglers using sand fleas, preferably soft ones, should be able to catch some nice puppy drum and mullet in the surf early in the morning.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76.5 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
