The town council plans to consider next month an ordinance governing the use of jet skis in nearby waters.
Town Attorney John Gaw outlined a proposed ordinance at Tuesday night's regular meeting that would prohibit operation of personal watercraft within 600 feet of beaches in Kitty Hawk.
The distance provision would make enforcement of the ordinance easier, he said.
``The rationale for this is that we're trying to have a distance so that there will be no question about whether someone is within or outside the restricted area,'' Gaw said.
In May, the General Assembly passed a law that gives municipalities the right to regulate the use of personal watercraft on waters within town limits.
The Kitty Hawk proposal would regulate only jet-powered craft, Gaw said. Propeller-driven vessels would not be affected.
In other business, the council unanimously rejected a change in the zoning ordinance to allow mini-storage businesses. Critics of the change said such businesses would cause increased traffic and noise, and would be an eyesore.
The council agreed to allow the issuance of building permits on unimproved subdivision streets. However, under an ``inform and warn'' policy, those seeking permits would be told that if any future improvements are made on the road, an assessment will be levied against them. by CNB
