BUILDINGS CELEBRATED

The Belvidere Academy and Newbold-White House will be sources of celebration Saturday when the public gathers to honor their places in history.

A historic marker will be erected at the academy on state Route 37 at 3 p.m. The school was built in the 1830s and was a major educational facility in Perquimans County until a century later.

The celebration will continue at 6:30 that evening with a special guest appearing at the Newbold-White House, built in 1730 and considered the oldest house in North Carolina.

A mystery woman ``representing'' the house's first family will make an appearance. ``No one knows who it is. It's a secret,'' said Harold White of Belvidere.

Other upcoming special events include an Oct. 13 gathering at the Newbold-White House, featuring musician Bob Zentz. On Oct. 14, a convocation will be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Elizabeth City to honor Roanoke Theological Seminary.
